You have just switched to contact lenses monthly (like the Acuvue Vita) or bi-monthly (like the Acuvue Oasys)? Unlike daily lenses that are discarded every evening, these models require a rigorous maintenance routine.
Good hygiene is the guarantee of lasting comfort and, above all, the health of your eyes. Here are the essential steps to become a maintenance expert.
1. The golden rule: Hand hygiene
Before even touching your eyes or your lens case:
Wash your hands with a mild soap (preferably unscented and oil-free).
Dry them thoroughly with a clean, lint-free towel.
Why? The tap water may contain bacteria and amoebas that are dangerous for the cornea. Never handle your lenses with wet hands from running water.
2. Cleaning and massaging (The "Rub & Rinse")
Once the lens is removed from your eye:
Place the lens in the palm of your hand.
Pour a few drops of multi-purpose solution.
Gently massage the lens with your index finger for about 10 to 20 seconds. This helps to loosen protein and lipid deposits accumulated during the day.
Rinse the lens thoroughly with the solution to remove impurities.
3. Nighttime decontamination
Place your lenses in their case filled with fresh solution.
Caution: Never reuse the solution from the previous day (the "topping"). Discard the old liquid and fill each compartment with fresh product.
Let soak for the recommended time (usually 6 hours minimum).
4. Don't forget the case!
The case is often the big forgotten one, even though it can be a breeding ground for bacteria.
Every morning, after putting in your lenses, empty the case.
Rinse it with fresh solution (never with water!).
Let it air dry, turned upside down on a clean tissue.
Important: Change your case every month (a new case is also provided with each new bottle of product).
Which product should I choose for my Acuvue lenses?
The choice of solution depends on your sensitivity and the recommendations of your optician :
Multifunction solutions (All-in-one) : Practical and quick, they are used to massage, rinse and decontaminate.
Peroxide systems : Ideal for ultra-sensitive or allergic eyes. They offer deeper decontamination but require a strict soaking time (often 6h) for the product to neutralise. Never put peroxide directly in your eye !
3 mistakes to absolutely avoid ❌
Sleeping with your lenses : Unless advised otherwise by your ophthalmologist, your eyes need to breathe at night.
Using tap water or saliva : This is the quickest way to cause a serious infection.
Exceeding the wearing duration : A monthly lens should be changed 30 days after opening, even if you haven't worn it every day.
