You have just received your new glasses equipped with high-tech lenses and, upon examining them closely, you notice a subtle tint green, blue or sometimes purple on the surface. Rest assured: far from being a defect, this slight coloration is the very signature of the quality and performance of your equipment.
Here’s why this "tint" exists and what it says about your lenses.
1. The secret is in the anti-reflective coating
A bare lens, without treatment, lets through about 92% of the light, while the 8% remaining bounces off the surface, creating annoying stray reflections.
To eliminate these reflections, microscopic layers of mineral salts are applied to the lens. This is what is called the anti-reflective treatment. Through a physical phenomenon of light interference, these layers "cancel" reflections. The slight colour you perceive is simply the residual colour of this treatment.
2. A matter of technological "signature"
Each manufacturer uses a specific combination of protective layers. The colour of the reflection varies according to the lens of the glass:
The green reflection: It is the most classic. It is chosen because it is the colour to which the human eye is most sensitive, allowing for optimised transparency and contrast.
The blue/purple reflection: Very common on high-end lenses, it often indicates a specific treatment against blue light from screens.
The "achromatic" reflection (almost white): Present on very high-performance treatments, it aims to be as discreet as possible for a perfect aesthetic.
3. The benefits for your vision
If this slight tint exists, it is to offer you a comfort that low-end lenses would not have:
Increased transparency: A high-end treated glass allows up to 99% of light to pass through. Result: a sharper and more natural vision.
Less visual fatigue: By eliminating reflections from headlights at night or from neon lights in the office, your eyes strain less.
A superior aesthetic: Ironically, it is this slight coloured reflection that makes the lens "invisible" to your conversation partner, as they no longer see their own reflection in your glasses, but directly your eyes.
Did you know? The more technical a lens is (scratch-resistant, dust-resistant, hydrophobic), the more treatment layers there are. The slight tint you see is visual proof that your lens is a true piece of engineering.
In summary
This coloured nuance does not alter your perception of colours in any way. On the contrary, it is a guarantee of optimal protection and exceptional clarity of vision. It is the difference between an ordinary pane and precision optics.
